Week 12

Your Baby's Development
Your baby's face has a profile now, complete with a tiny chin and nose. The brain continues to develop, and tiny fingernails and toenails form.

Your baby's intestines can now fit into his or her abdomen. In addition, because of increased maternal blood volume, the fetus' heart rate may increase by a few beats a minute.

You haven't had to change a wet diaper yet, but you will soon enough! Your baby's first urine is made and eliminated into the amniotic sac this week.

Your Body
Has anyone told you that you have that "pregnant glow"? It's not just the joy you may feel because you're having a baby - there's a physiological reason for smoother, more radiant skin during pregnancy. The increased blood volume and pregnancy hormone, hCG, work together to give you that glow. The greater blood volume brings more blood to the blood vessels and hCG increases oil gland secretion, resulting in a flushed, plumper, smoother skin appearance. Sometimes, though, the increased oil gland secretion can cause temporary acne.
